The newly sworn-in United States President, Joe Biden has overturned Donald Trump’s policy that prohibited granting of immigrant visas to Nigerians and nationals of other countries.
It should be recalled that Trump expanded curbs on immigration to include six additional countries including Nigeria in January 2020.
At that time, the government of United States said the policy was formulated to tighten security for countries that did not abide by the minimum security standards of U.S. or cooperate to halt illegal immigration.
But the administration of Biden, which partly campaigned on a message of diversity, now seeks to open up America to the world once again.
The visa ban reversal happens to be part of government actions aimed at overturning key policies of Trump without depending on Congress on topics which range from COVID-19 pandemic to climate change.
Biden has stopped United States exit from World Health Organization, cancelled construction of Trump’s valued wall on the Mexican border, and reversed ban on visitors from many Muslim-majority countries.
Also, Biden has committed the United States to returning to the Paris climate accord, obstructed an oil pipeline project, and stopped Arctic drilling in a batch of executive orders he signed hours after assuming office.
