Cyberattack confirmed by US government

The United States government has confirmed that its computer networks had been stormed by a cyberattack. This confirmation came at a time when Washington Post reported that a minimum of  two departments had been targeted by Russian state hackers.

While talking to AFP, Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s spokesperson said: “We have been working closely with our agency partners regarding recently discovered activity on government networks.

“CISA is providing technical assistance to affected entities as they work to identify and mitigate any potential compromises.”

According to The Post, the hacks were connected to a recent attack on cybersecurity firm, FireEye, which disclosed its defenses were hit by sophisticated attackers that stole tools that were used to test customers’ computer systems.

FireEye however revealed it suspected the attack was sponsored by the state.

Also, US media reports said the FBI was investigating a group that is working for the Russian foreign intelligence service, SVR, and that breaches had been happening for months.

While talking about the government’s awareness of the reports, the National Security Council spokesman, John Ullyot said: “The United States government is aware of these reports and we are taking all necessary steps to identify and remedy any possible issues related to this situation.”

The embassy of Russia has denied any involvement in the alleged attacks. In a statement issued by the embassy on its official Facebook page, the embassy wrote: “Malicious activities in the information space contradicts the principles of the Russian foreign policy, national interests and our understanding of interstate relations.
