United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has appointed famous Nigerian music icon, Yemi Alade, as their latest goodwill ambassador.
According to the UNDP, the multi award-winning artiste’s role with is to help bring the impact of poor health and socio-economic systems on the poorest and most vulnerable people which mostly include women in developing countries to light, UNDP reports.
While announcing the appointment, the UNDP tweeted: “We’re pleased to welcome Nigerian superstar @yemialadee as our newest UNDP Goodwill Ambassador! We thank Yemi for being our voice for a green and equitable recovery #UNGA #GlobalGoalsWeek”
While reacting to her appointment, Yemi Alade said women were part of the high number of people in the world that were striving to survive the COVID-19 pandemic without any form of social protection. She added that she wanted to do the best she can in helping these women who had no choice but to work without the alternative of doing it remotely in a bid to provide for their families during the pandemic.
She said: “I want to lend my voice to these women and other vulnerable people who make up half of the world that’s struggling to make ends meet. They don’t have the luxury of working from home and are putting their health at risk just to put food on the table.”
