The prime suspect, an accomplice and a suspected master-mind, who were detained over the disappearance and murder of Canada citizen, Nicholas Ramkissoon Jaipaul, have been remanded in prison after they were all charged with murder.

26-year-old Charran Sewdhan, also known as ‘Vickey’; 23-year-old Aszim Shivgobin also known as ‘Blackie’ and 56-year-old Moonasar Beharry, also known as ‘Brick head’ of Lot 125 Section ‘A’, Number 70 Vill-age, Corentyne recently appeared at the George-town Magistrate’s Court in Guyana.

Magistrate Alex Moore, who presides at the Magistrate Court, read the joint charge to the accused persons through Zoom. The charge alleges that they killed Jaipaul, 23, at Moleson Creek, Upper Corentyne.

The accused persons were not required to enter a plea and their case was adjourned to September 24.

Jaipaul, 23, came to Guyana with his grandfather, Ramkissoon Jaipaul in January. The duo resided at the grandfather’s house located in Number 69 Village, Corentyne. Their initial plan was to leave Guyana in May but the plan could not be implemented due to flight restrictions that were induced by COVID-19.

His grandfather had said that Nicholas was awake when he went to bed on Sunday, August, 16, around 7.30 pm.

Meanwhile, he received a strange call when he woke up the following morning and the caller was asking if he knew that his grandson was not in the house. The strange call led him to file a police report.

He disclosed that he was not asked to pay a ransom but he suspected that was the reason for the call.

The suspected remains of Jaipaul were found in some bushes along the Moleson Creek main access road recently after Sewdhan allegedly confessed and took investigators to the location.

In a statement issued by Sewdhan to the police, Sewdhan said he was hired to kidnap Jaipaul, murder him and call his grand-father to demand for a ransom of $50 million.

Also, he told investigators that he was asked to kill the grandfather when he delivers the ransom and that he would be given $500,000.

Sewdhan alleged that the plan was hijacked by another person after Jaipaul’s grandfather had charged a group of farmers to court over unpaid rents for rice lands.

It was gathered that Jaipaul’s grandfather once had a rice mill that he sold many years back and then began renting his rice lands to farmers in the community.

However, after many rice farmers defaulted in their rent payments, the old man filed a lawsuit against them.

According to a senior police, Sewdhan befriended Nicholas and on that fateful night, he messaged Nicholas come and meet him outside, as such, there was no evidence of forced entry into the house but Sewdhan and Shivgobin, who he recruited as his accomplice, were already waiting for Jaipaul in a car outside.

It was also gathered that police also have a statement from Shivgobin detailing the plot to commit murder in their possession.
