The Senate has again berated the Minister of State for Employment, Labour and Productivity, Mr Festus Keyamo(SAN), again over the recruitment of 774 , 000 Nigerians for the Federal Government ’s Special Public Works programme.

During an interview with The PUNCH, Senate spokesperson, Dr Ajibola Basiru, said the Minister’s claim that each member of the National Assembly was offered 30 slots in the currently ongoing nationwide public works recruitment is false.

As Keyamo is being condemned by the Senate, the Chairman of Special Public Works in Ogun State, Senator Gbenga Obadara, said during an interview with The PUNCH that four doctoral and 200 Master’s degree holders applied in Ogun state.

It should be recalled that President Muhammadu Buhari approved the employment of 774,000 workers as part of efforts to cushion the economic hardship induced by the COVID-19 pandemic few months ago.

Nigerians, who will be unskilled workers, will take home N20,000 each every month for a period of three months under the programme.

A minimum of 1,000 workers will be employed in each of the 774 local government areas of the country.

The programme was stalled last month when the National Assembly and Keyamo did not agree over who should handle the recruitment.

The Senators insisted that National Directorate of Employment should handle the programme and the disagreement subsided after President Buhari’s intervention.

Nigerians have however reacted to the shocking revelation that four PhD holders and 200 MSc holders applied for the job.

Check out some of their reactions below.
