The President and Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, John Young, has resigned after recent allegations of discrimination, systemic racism and sexual harassment claims at the Winnipeg facility.
The Board of Trustees of the museum said John Young had agreed that he must effectively step down immediately in the best interest of the museum.
The Board Chairperson, Pauline Rafferty in a news release said: “We will act quickly to improve museum processes and our policies, and to rebuild relationships and trust with our staff and those we have let down, especially the Black and Indigenous communities, people of colour and LGBTQ2+ communities.
“We apologize unreservedly for what has happened and we know that the fight against systemic racism, homophobia, inequality and all forms of othering must be ongoing, and must be a priority.”
Rafferty said the allegations were not suitably brought to the Board of Trustee’s attention.
She said since the board had a more complete understanding of the situation, it is taking urgent action and will undergo long-term steps to tackle the problems.
Rafferty will take over as Interim CEO until a new leader emerges.
