A group of Senators has called on the Prime Minister of Canada to foist sanctions on Chinese officials over the way China treats its Muslim minority, increased restriction of freedom in Hong Kong and the detention of two Canadians.
The Senators are 12 in number and most of them are Conservatives. However, some of the Senators were appointed on the recommendation of Liberal Prime Ministers which include Justin Trudeau.
In a letter, the Senators said that China is “constantly and mercilessly perpetrating horrendous and utterly inhuman acts towards other groups.”
Canada has a law that permits the government to target the individual finances of foreign officials that are responsible for human rights violations, freezing assets that are under the control of Canada and preventing Canadian institutions to transact business with them.
Also, the Liberals are encountering pressure from the other side with one Senator urging the government to think about interceding to free Chinese high-tech Executive, Meng Wanzhou from a possible extradition to the United States.
Trudeau dismissed that idea and declared that Meng’s case would continue without intervention from politicians despite the imprisonment of two Canadians, Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor in China in what is seen by Canadians as retaliation.
