The Executive Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, has revealed that around 60% of Coronavirus cases recorded in Rivers state can be traved to oil sector workers.
The Governor disclosed this during a meeting with Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited’s management team at Government House yesterday. He stressed that some of the cases are oil workers coming back from rigs and blamed unscreened oil workers for the increased number of COVID-19 cases in Rivers State.
Also, Wike insisted that he did not target his actions at any imdividual or organisation as oil still remained the backbone of the economy. He recalled how 3 out of 14 oil workers that were quarantined in Rivers State tested positive for Coronavirus.
He said: “It’s not in anybody’s interest to deny people to carry out their official duties. Oil is the main stay of the economy of Nigeria and without it, we that is in this part of the country will find it difficult to function.
“My concern is that companies should always notify government of workers they are bringing into the state, so that our health officials can monitor them.”
