Wild Jubilation Erupts In Abia As LP’s Candidate Wins Guber Election

Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, has taken a significant step towards fiscal responsibility and good governance by signing the Abia State of Nigeria Governors and Deputy Governors Pension Repeal Law of 2024. This law, recently passed by the state House of Assembly, marks the end of pension payments to former governors and deputy governors in the state.

In his remarks after signing the bill, Governor Otti commended the state House of Assembly for their swift action in passing the legislation and assured them of his administration’s full support. He reiterated his long-held belief that diverting funds towards pension payments for former government officials was not in the best interest of the state. Instead, he emphasized the need to prioritize addressing the backlog of pensions owed to retired workers since 2014.

Governor Otti emphasized that leadership is about stewardship and serving the people, not self-interest. He underscored the moral imperative of using public funds responsibly for the benefit of the citizens. Despite acknowledging that he would have personally benefited from the continuation of the pension law, he emphasized his commitment to prioritizing the welfare of workers and pensioners over personal gain.

Expressing gratitude towards the House of Assembly, Governor Otti highlighted the collaborative relationship between the executive and legislative branches, grounded in trust and mutual respect. He emphasized their shared dedication to advancing the common good and serving the interests of the people of Abia State.

The legislation, presented by the Speaker of the state House of Assembly and supported by the Deputy Speaker, repeals the previous law allowing for pension payments to former governors and deputy governors. Governor Otti’s decisive action reflects his administration’s commitment to prudent financial management and accountability, setting a precedent for responsible governance in Abia State.
