It has been confirmed that Roy McMurtry, former Ontario Attorney General, has died. He died at the age of 91.
McMurtry was a lawyer for no fewer than 17 years. He was elected to the Ontario legislature in 1975. He served as the province’s Attorney General till 1985 under Premier Bill Davis.
As Ontario’s attorney general, he oversaw reforms to Ontario’s justice system which included integration of bilingualism in court, introduction of bills aimed at family law reform and advocating for multiculturalism.
Also, he played a major role in the creation of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the repatriation of the Canadian Constitution.
Between 1985 and 1988, he was Canada’s High Commissioner to Great Britain and was appointed as Associate Chief Justice of the Superior Court in Ontario in 1991. He became Chief Justice of that court in 1994.
McMurtry became Chief Justice of Ontario in 1996 and held that position till 2007.
