In a stunning upset, Joseph Parker emerged victorious over Deontay Wilder in a unanimous decision at the Kingdom Arena, headlining a heavyweight doubleheader. Parker, considered the underdog, showcased superior skills throughout the fight, outclassing the 38-year-old Wilder in this clash of former heavyweight champions.
Parker, 31, dominated from the onset, delivering powerful right-hand punches and employing a strategic and methodical approach that kept Wilder on the defensive. The unanimous decision in Parker’s favor underscored his control of the bout, with Wilder having only one round where he appeared to have an advantage.
Reflecting on his triumph, Parker stated, “Dangerous fight, tough fight, we trained very hard for this… This is a great finish to the year.” Meanwhile, Wilder acknowledged his timing was off and credited Parker for avoiding many of his punches.
The doubleheader was anticipated to set up a March bout between Wilder and the winner of the night’s second heavyweight clash between Anthony Joshua and Otto Wallin. However, Parker’s impressive victory has now positioned him as a potential contender for the March matchup. The ultimate goal for the winner of that fight is a shot at the undisputed championship, which will be decided on February 17 when Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk meet in Saudi Arabia, with the aim of unifying the heavyweight division.
Wilder, the former WBC champion from 2015-2020, has seen limited activity since losing his title to Fury in 2020. The recent defeat raises questions about his readiness to face top-tier opponents.
In earlier bouts, Dmitrii Bivol secured a unanimous decision over Lyndon Arthur, claiming the IBO light heavyweight and WBA super light heavyweight belts. The card also featured impressive knockouts, including Daniel Dubois’ 10th-round TKO of Jarrell Miller, Agit Kabayel’s fourth-round TKO of Arslanbek Makhmudov, Jai Opetaia’s first-round knockout of Ellis Zorro, Filip Hrgovic’s first-round TKO of Mark De Mori, and Frank Sanchez’s seventh-round knockout of Junior Fa.
