Argentina’s newly inaugurated President, Javier Milei, has taken bold steps to address the country’s economic challenges by selling two national private jets and reducing the number of official vehicles and drivers by 50%. This move is a clear demonstration of his commitment to curbing government spending and addressing hyperinflation, with an anticipated annual saving of $3 billion.
In a statement released by his spokesperson, Manuel Adorni, Milei’s actions are aimed at combating Argentina’s staggering 3,678% annual inflation rate, as predicted by the Minister of Economy, Luis Toto Caputo. Adorni emphasized the urgency of addressing the hyperinflation situation, stating, “Talking about 15,000% inflation is frightening for everyone, and that is what we are working on.”
The sold airplanes belonged to YPF, a government-owned oil and gas company, and were previously used primarily by privileged statesmen. According to Adorni, this strategic move aims to eliminate privileges and contribute to stabilizing the country’s economic situation.
Adorni highlighted the government’s commitment to reducing political expenses, specifically in operating costs, by approximately $3 billion annually. The objective is to put an end to financial privileges and make necessary adjustments to promote fiscal responsibility.
President Milei further demonstrated his commitment to austerity by raffling off his last salary as a lawmaker, fulfilling a political promise to donate his monthly remuneration. In an Instagram live session, the 53-year-old leader stated, “This is the last draw for my salary as a deputy because I now got myself another job.”
Milei’s proactive measures and commitment to financial responsibility signal a determined effort to address economic challenges and promote a more sustainable financial future for Argentina.
