The Malton Youth Hub Jonathan Davis Centre, which was described by Mississauga officials as “a hopping place” when its doors were opened its doors in October, is officially open to the public.
The “one-of-a-kind” youth centre, which went through a massive renovation to get it converted from a school swimming pool, welcomed visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. Food, entertainment and an opening/reopening ceremony were all on tap during the event.
While talking about the opening on social media, Ward 5 Coun. Carolyn Parrish said: “Be prepared to be amazed by this $12-million pool conversion.” She added that the opening event had been planned and executed by the facility’s Youth Board of Directors.
Officials said the renovated facility, which is attached to Lincoln Alexander Secondary School on Morning Star Drive, was converted from a school swimming pool into a big, multi-use centre for young people.
Earlier this fall, Parrish described the reimagined 18,000-sq.-ft. facility as an “incredible youth space in Malton serving all the various needs of kids today.”
Also, the hub has been described as a “one-of-a-kind” and “state-of-the-art” facility for youth.
The hub, whose construction and renovation started in January 2022, is named after ab 17-year-oild youth who was in a parkette outside his Darcel Avenue apartment building in Malton on September 14, 2019..
Jonathan Davis, a Grade 12 honour roll student at Lincoln Alexander, alongside five other innocent bystanders were hit by bullets during a gunfire outbreak in the residential neighbourhood.
City officials earlier stated that the new facility provides services and programs “that reflect the local youth needs.”
The new hub includes a large atrium for gathering, a commercial kitchen for teaching programs, a room dedicated for youths to hang out, meet and play,a multi-purpose room for programs, meetings and events, and small multi-purpose rooms for working and counselling
