The Calgary Surge is set to make a significant move for the 2024 season, announcing that their first home game will take place at the iconic Scotiabank Saddledome. The announcement was made during a fan event on Thursday, where attendees were also treated to a screening of the documentary “Home Team: The Inaugural Season of the Calgary Surge.”
During their inaugural season in the city, the Surge played home games at the WinSport Event Centre in northwest Calgary, with a capacity of 3,200 seats. This stands in stark contrast to the massive seating capacity of the Saddledome, which exceeds 19,000 seats.
The Surge, formerly known as the Nighthawks, relocated from Guelph, Ontario, after the 2022 Canadian Elite Basketball League season. In the 2023 season, the team achieved a commendable record of 12 wins and eight losses, embarking on a deep playoff run that culminated in a championship game loss to the Scarborough Shooting Stars with a score of 82 to 70.
Reflecting on the team’s journey, Jason Ribeiro, the vice-chairman and president of the Surge, remarked, “It’s been a whirlwind. On paper, it’s been a very magical story, almost surreal. A few baskets away from winning a championship, four sellout games… The trust and the faith that the community has had has emboldened us to even think bigger.”
As part of the celebration, Ribeiro presented Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek with a customized Calgary Surge jersey. Following their season opener at the Saddledome, the Surge plans to play the remainder of their home games in 2024 on the Surge Court at WinSport, continuing to build on the momentum and support garnered from the community.
