In a significant move reflecting internal tensions within the Catholic Church, Pope Francis has ousted Bishop Joseph Strickland of Texas, a prominent conservative figure who vocally opposed the pontiff’s progressive reforms.
The Vatican’s announcement revealed that Bishop Strickland, formerly in charge of the Diocese of Tyler, was “relieved” of his position following an “apostolic visitation” ordered by the pope in June. The visitation aimed to investigate the governance and leadership of Bishop Strickland, a staunch critic who accused Pope Francis of undermining the tenets of the faith.
Cardinal Daniel Nicholas DiNardo, Metropolitan Archbishop of Galveston-Houston, explained that an “exhaustive” probe conducted by two US bishops deemed Bishop Strickland’s continued leadership “unfeasible.” Despite a request to resign, the bishop’s refusal prompted Pope Francis to order his removal.
The move has sparked discontent among conservative Catholic commentators in the US, with some characterizing it as a form of “total war” against traditional values. Michael Matt, editor of The Remnant Newspaper, expressed concern over what he sees as a threat to the fidelity of the Church.
This development follows Pope Francis’s recent announcement that the church would permit the baptism of transgender Catholics and their inclusion as godparents, provided it avoids causing scandal or confusion. The pope has also expressed openness to blessing gay marriages as part of the Church’s broader outreach to the LGBTQ community.
Notably, Pope Francis’s progressive stance on social issues and climate change has faced resistance from more conservative elements within the US Church. Bishop Strickland, appointed head of the diocese in 2012 by Benedict XVI, had not only criticized LGBTQ reforms but also been an outspoken opponent of Covid-19 vaccines and lockdowns, while strongly condemning President Joe Biden for his support of abortion rights.
The temporary replacement for Bishop Strickland is Bishop Joe Vásquez of Austin, marking a transitional period for the Diocese of Tyler.
