CP Football returned to the Parapan Am program in 2015, following its last appearance in 2007. During the 2015 Parapan American Games in Toronto, the Canadian squad finished fourth. Sam Charron, the team captain, shared his excitement, expressing his desire to compete for Canada and witness other Para athletes in action, an experience he hasn’t had since the Toronto Games.
Nicholas Heffernan and Dustin Hodgson, alongside Sam Charron, are the three athletes with prior Parapan Am experience. They were all part of the 2015 team, and Hodgson also competed in the 2007 Parapan Am Games, where Canada secured a bronze medal.
At the 2022 Men’s World Cup, Canada placed ninth. The team currently holds the ninth position in the International Federation of CP Football men’s team world rankings, and they are ranked fourth in the Americas, following Brazil, the USA, and Argentina.
The CP Football event, also known as 7-a-side football, is scheduled to take place from November 18 to 25 in Santiago. This sport is designed for athletes with cerebral palsy or acquired brain injuries and was part of the Paralympic Games from 1984 to 2016, although it is not currently on the Paralympic program.
The Santiago 2023 Parapan Am Games will occur from November 17 to 26, 2023, in Santiago, Chile. Canada is set to send a team of around 140 athletes to the event. Prior to being officially named to the Canadian Parapan Am Team, all nominations are subject to approval by the Canadian Paralympic Committee.
