Ontario NDP Leader, Marit Stiles, has asked one of her MPPs to bring down a controversial social media post about the Hamas-Israel conflict that talked about the plight of Palestinians under Israeli occupation but did not talk about the violent, surprise Hamas attack or the number of people who died in the aftermath.
This came after calls from Jewish groups for Stiles to instantly remove that MPP (Hamilton Centre’s Sarah Jama, who was forced to beg in March for remarks about Israel) from the NDP caucus.
Stiles said: “I have asked that she retract her statement, and state clearly that she decries any violence against both Israeli and Palestinian people.
“The terrorist attacks by Hamas on thousands of innocent Israeli civilians are unjustifiable and must be condemned unequivocally.”
Jama did not respond to requests for comment from the Star. Her post remained online hours after the statement from Stiles was forwarded to the media.
Jama’s recent post with the hashtag #FreePalastine referred to the Palestinian case as an “apartheid in real-time through the continued violation of human rights in Gaza … for 75 years, violence and retaliation rooted in settler colonialism have taken the lives of far too many innocent people. I call for an immediate cease-fire and de-escalation. We must look to the solution to this endless cycle of death and destruction: end all occupation of Palestinian land and end apartheid.”

The Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center stated that Jama’s post is “deeply troubling.”
The centre added: “After more than 900 people, including infants and the elderly, were brutally massacred, and numerous others were tortured and taken hostage, such a statement is nothing short of abhorrent.
“This is not the first time Jama has made statements that have caused significant hurt and harm to the Jewish community … it is long past time for the Ontario NDP to take decisive action and remove Sarah Jama from its caucus. Her continued presence … sends a disturbing message that her views are tolerated, or worse, condoned.”
The Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs revealed that Jama’s post was “filled with lies that will do nothing to create peace & will only serve to foment hatred against Canada’s Jewish community.”
