Medical tourism in Mexico is booming as Canadians who seek alternative treatments for Lyme disease now travel to the country for treatment. As the number of Lyme disease cases increases in Canada, many are turning to clinics in Mexico, hoping for a better approach to healing.
Lyme disease is a tick-borne illness that has witnessed a dramatic increase in Canada in recent years. The rise may be a result of climate change and warmer temperatures, which create more thriving environments for the ticks that transmit the disease. Despite antibiotics being the recommended treatment, some patients’ symptoms can become chronic and in turn, lead to a desperate search for alternative treatment options.
The traditional protocol for treating Lyme disease treatment in Canada involves preliminary tests followed by the administration of antibiotics. Meanwhile, some patients are not satisfied with this approach, as it may not effectively cure all symptoms, particularly those of chronic Lyme disease. This dissatisfaction and lack of recognition or attention to Lyme disease in Canada, has made many seek treatment elsewhere.
Mexican clinics offer a full-body approach and alternative therapies that are often not available or recognized in Canada to treat Lyme. These treatments include hyperthermia, stem cell therapy, extended antibiotic use, and plasmapheresis treatment. Though these methods are expensive and are not globally universally supported by evidence, they offer hope to patients battling with the debilitating symptoms of chronic Lyme disease.

The use of alternative treatments for Lyme disease has been criticized. The Canadian medical community stated that their scientifically supported protocol for Lyme disease is effective, and alternative treatments may not fight symptoms effectively. A study however suggests that long-term symptoms in Lyme patients may be due to the body’s immune response rather than ongoing infection. Despite this, the appeal of alternative treatments remains strong for patients who feel traditional methods have failed them.
