One of the earliest recorded instances of Thanksgiving in Canada dates back to 1578 when English explorer Martin Frobisher held a Thanksgiving celebration in what is now Newfoundland to give thanks for his safe voyage across the Atlantic. However, it wasn’t until 1879 that Thanksgiving became an official holiday in Canada.
The credit for establishing Thanksgiving as a national holiday in Canada goes to Sir John A. Macdonald, Canada’s first Prime Minister. He declared Thanksgiving to be a day to give thanks for the bountiful harvest and blessings of the past year. Initially, Thanksgiving was celebrated on different dates in various provinces, but in 1957, the Canadian Parliament established the second Monday in October as the official Thanksgiving Day.

Indigenous communities across Canada had their own traditions of giving thanks for the fall harvest, often involving feasting and ceremonies.
