Joe Biden appoints two Nigerian-Americans as advisers

The President of the United States, Joe Biden, has appointed two individuals of Nigerian descent as special advisors. Osagie Imasogie and Chinenye Ogwumike are among the 12 members selected for the President’s Advisory Council on African Diaspora Engagement in the United States. This appointment was officially announced by the State House.

The members of the council include Silvester Scott Beaman, who will serve as the council’s chair, along with Mimi E. Alemayehou, Rosalind Brewer, Viola Davis, Helene D. Gayle, Patrick Hubert Gaspard, C.D. Glin, Osagie Imasogie, Almaz Negash, Chinenye Joy Ogwumike, Ham K. Serunjogi, and Kevin Young. They will collectively serve during the 2023-2025 term.

The establishment of this council aims to foster a deeper dialogue between U.S. officials and the African Diaspora. The council comprises individuals who have excelled in various fields, including government, sports, creative industries, business, academia, social work, and faith-based activities. Their role will be to provide invaluable guidance in strengthening cultural, social, political, and economic ties between the United States and Africa. Additionally, they will work to promote trade, investment, and educational exchanges between the two regions.

Here are brief profiles of Osagie Imasogie and Chinenye “Chiney” Ogwumike:

He is also a co-founder of PIPV Capital, a private equity firm focused on the life sciences industry, with investments exceeding $1 billion. Prior to co-founding PIPV Capital, he established GlaxoSmithKline Ventures and served as its founding Vice President. Osagie has held senior positions in pharmaceutical companies such as GSK, SmithKline Beecham, and DuPont Merck. Chinenye “Chiney” Ogwumike: Chiney is a 2-time WNBA All-Star for the Los Angeles Sparks and a full-time, multi-platform ESPN host and NBA analyst. She plays as a forward for the Sparks and is a proud first-generation Nigerian-American. Chiney was the 1st overall pick in the 2014 WNBA Draft and graduated from Stanford University with a degree in International Relations under the mentorship of Dr. Condoleezza Rice.

In addition to her athletic achievements, she has excelled academically, receiving numerous honors for her academic success. Chiney also served as the vice president of the WNBA Players Association (WNBPA) from 2018 to 2022, playing a significant role in negotiating the groundbreaking 2020 collective bargaining agreement. She made history in 2020 by becoming the first Black woman to host a national, daily sports-talk radio show. Chiney is an executive producer and has produced an ESPN Films documentary titled “144” on the 2020 WNBA season. She is a Forbes 30 Under 30 honoree and a full-time multi-platform ESPN NBA Analyst, making her one of the youngest national sports studio analysts and one of the only full-time professional athletes in a national sports media position.
