The National Investigation Agency (NIA), India’s federal anti-terror agency, has intensified its efforts against alleged Khalistani militants by seizing properties linked to Gurpatwant Singh Pannu, a figure accused of masterminding terrorism in India. This development marks an important step in India’s effort to dismantle suspected terror and secessionist networks operating from countries like Canada.
The rift between Canada and India has escalated after a statement by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Trudeau suggested that there were “credible allegations” implicating Indian government agents in the killing of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar, in Canada in June. Nijjar had been campaigning for the establishment of an independent Sikh homeland, often referred to as “Khalistan.”
Amid these diplomatic tensions, videos have emerged on social media showing Pannu allegedly threatening Indian Hindus in Canada and instructing them to vacate the country. The NIA registered a case against Pannu in 2019 and accused him of spreading fear and terror in Punjab and other parts of India. In February 2011, the NIA issued non-bailable warrants for Pannu’s arrest and he was declared a ‘Proclaimed Offender’ in November 2011.

The seizure of Pannu’s properties is a strategic move in India’s fight against terrorism as it serves as a stern message to those who pose a threat to the security of the nation from abroad. It will also impact the operations of the secessionist network Pannu is accused of being part of.
The government of India has consistently maintained a firm stance against the Khalistani movement, which it sees as a threat to national security and territorial integrity. The recent property seizures and warrants for Pannu’s arrest are part of India’s ongoing efforts to decimate the alleged Khalistani militancy, both within and outside the country.
