Ottawa Reports $5.5 Billion Budget Deficit

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has concluded a two-day working visit to Singapore with both countries announcing plans for a “youth mobility agreement”.

According to a statement by Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), this will foster better people-to-people ties and improve cross-cultural exchanges by making it easier for young people from the two countries to work and travel in each other’s countries.

MFA said Trudeau met Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and both reaffirmed the warm friendship between the countries.

The Ministry added that ties between Singapore and Canada are “underpinned by a shared outlook on key issues like commitment to multilateralism and the rule of law, and recognition of the importance of free trade.”

While disclosing further, MFA said during the meeting at the Istana, the Prime Ministers discussed international developments and how Singapore and Canada can work together to uphold the rules-based multilateral order while advancing economic growth “for the betterment of our people.”

Lee also embraced Canada’s deepening engagement with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and congratulated his counterpart on the recent upgrade of ASEAN-Canada relations to a strategic partnership.

Trudeau said Canada is expected to finalize a free trade agreement with the regional bloc.

The ministry talked about the Canada-Singapore Cybersecurity Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that covers information exchange and skills among others.

Negotiations have also commenced on a general security agreement to facilitate stronger defence exchanges and collaboration between Canada and Singapore.

Both countries are also discussing ways to deepen cooperation in science, technology and innovation.
