Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has spoken with Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu. During the call, the two leaders highlighted Canada and Nigeria’s strong people-to-people ties.
Trudeau commended Tinubu for his strong leadership of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and expressed Canada’s support for the bloc’s peaceful and diplomatic efforts to restore democracy in Niger.
Also, the leaders expressed their concerns for the safety of Niger’s President, Mohamed Bazoum, who has been detained for over a month in Niger.
The leaders discussed democratic backsliding in West Africa. the Sahel, and reiterated their unflinching commitment to safeguarding democracy around the world.
Trudeau talked about Canada’s commitment to West Africa and concern for the situation in Gabon, with the two leaders highlighting the importance of regional stability in tackling the spread of terrorism.
The Prime Minister reiterated Canada’s commitment to safeguarding the human rights of LGBTQI+ people around the world.
Furthermore, the Prime Minister highlighted Canada’s increasing economic engagement in Africa and restated Canada’s support for the African Continental Free Trade Area.
