90-year-old Cameroon president and 65-year-old Rwanda president change Minister of Defence and key military positions hours after Gabon coup

Paul Biya, the President of Cameroon, has made major changes to the country’s Ministry of Defence. This happened hours after Gabon coup.

The delegate to the presidency in charge of defence, air force staff, navy, and the police were among the reshuffled posts. Biya announced the changes on social media platform, X, formerly known as Twitter.

The 90-year-old President came to power in a coup d’etat in 1982 and has remained president since then.

In the same vein, Rwanda’s Defence force (RDF) announced on X that President Paul Kagame approved the retirement of 83 senior officers.

The RDF revealed that Kagame also approved the promotion and appointment of some officers to replace the previous office holders.

Today, the CDS RDF Lt Gen M Muganga held meetings with HE Hazza AlQahtani, Ambassador of UAE to Rwanda and Colonel JE ACHU, Defence Attaché of Cameroon. They discussed ways to enhance defence cooperation between their respective countries. pic.twitter.com/K0FU1EyA2L

Meetings between Rwanda’s Chief of Defence Staff, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Ambassador to Rwanda, and the Defence attaché of Cameroon also took place to discuss ways “to enhance defence cooperation between their respective countries”.

Rwanda’s constitution was amended in 2015 to allow Kagame, who has been in power since 2000, to remain president until 2034.
