Police in India are currently investigating a teacher after a viral video of her encouraging students to slap their 7-year-old classmate, who is Muslim, generated widespread controversy in the country.
The video of the incident, which happened in the Muzaffarnagar district in northern Uttar Pradesh state, shows the boy standing in front of his classmates as the teacher orders students to hit him.
The boy cried as his classmates took turns to slap him, while the teacher was telling the students to do it “properly.” A man was laughing in the background as the boy cried while the slapping continued.
While talking about the incident, Muzaffarnagar’s Superintendent of Police, Satyanarayan Prajapat, said the teacher told students to hit the boy “for not remembering his times tables.”
Prajapat disclosed that the teacher also referenced the boy’s religion.
The female teacher reportedly said: “When the mothers of Mohammedan (one who follows Islam) students don’t pay attention to their children’s studies, their performance is ruined.”
Police in the district have initiated a case against the teacher and an investigation has commenced. Though the teacher has not been formally charged, district officials have ordered the school to shut down,
While talking to CNN, the boy’s father said his son felt “restless and scared” after the incident.
He said though the boy is doing much better now, he “was unable to sleep earlier and was left in shock” afterwards.
The incident has generated widespread anger and upset in India.
