First robot-assisted knee replacement at Brampton Civic Hospital successful

Brampton Civic Hospital Doctors have given an Ontario man a bionic boost with the assistance of a surgical robot with plans for additional high-tech mechanisms down the line.

In June, Michael Clair became the first patient to go through a robot-assisted total knee replacement surgery at the hospital.

According to William Osler Health Systems, the new robotic surgical assistant (ROSA) of the hospital is one of the 10 robotic assistants being used in hospitals across Canada and uses real-time information to assist surgeons with the pinpoint placement of knee implants based on the anatomy of the patient.

A ROSA-assisted surgery can lead to reduced pain, reduced risk of complications and faster recovery time. Those advantages helped to ease the anxiety of Clair’s going into the procedure, saying he had “full confidence” in surgeon Dr John Harrington and the Osler team as a whole.

Clair, 60, was discharged from the hospital the same day he had his surgery with his wife Kim who helped through his recovery process.

He said: “My wife has had two hip replacements, so she’s been through this and will be working from home to help me get through it.”

Harrington said his plan is to use ROSA for every first-time knee replacement and is already looking to add other types of knee and hip surgeries later.

Clair’s other knee also needs a replacement, as an injury on the job almost 30 years ago tore his meniscus. Coupled with years of wear and tear and advanced arthritis in both knees, Clair resolved that a full knee replacement was his best option for a better life.
