A 25-year-old firefighter from Ontario died life while fighting the Donnie Creek wildfire in northeast British Columbia. This marks the second death of firefighter in the province during the unprecedented wildfire of 2023. The firefighter was contracted to the B.C. Wildfire Service but succumbed to injuries he sustained when his utility terrain vehicle stepped over a sharp drop on a gravel road in a remote area north of Fort St. John, B.C.
Though he was swiftly airlifted to the Fort St. John Airport, the firefighter tragically died during the journey. The firefighter’s identity has not been disclosed as a mark of respect of the bereaved family’s privacy. The incident is currently being investigated by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), WorkSafeBC, the B.C. Coroners Service, and the B.C. Wildfire Service.

The Premier of B.C., Premier David Eby and Ontario Premier Doug Ford have expressed their condolences over the untimely death of the firefighter. Premier Eby acknowledged that the firefighter died due to injuries he sustained while bravely fighting the Donnie Creek wildfire, the largest ever recorded in B.C.’s history.
May his soul rest in peace.
