United Kingdom Embassy in Kenya sparks outrage by hoisting LGBTQ flag

The UK Embassy in Kenya has encountered a backlash from some Kenyans on social media, after it posted a tweet on its official handle, offering support for the LGBTQ community.

The tweet, which was accompanied by a picture, revealed the UK embassy hoisting the LGBTQ flag at their offices in Nairobi.

The tweet read: “We’re proudly flying the rainbow flag at the British High Commission to mark Pride Month. In the UK, we know that when everyone is free to thrive and be themselves, we all benefit. Everyone should be free to love who they love.”

The tweet was meant to commemorate Pride Month, which is observed every June to mark the Stonewall riots of 1969 in New York, which are considered to be a turning point for the gay rights movement. The LGBTQ flag, also known as the rainbow flag, is a sign of diversity and inclusion for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer people.

The tweet did not go down well with some Kenyans on Twitter, who voiced out their displeasure and anger at the UK embassy for backing what they view as an immoral and unnatural lifestyle. Some of them slammed the UK embassy for disrespecting Kenya’s culture and laws, which frown at homosexuality and same-sex marriage. Also, some of them threatened to boycott UK products and services or to protest outside the embassy.

On the other hand, some Kenyans on thanked the UK embassy for showing solidarity with the LGBTQ community in Kenya, which encounters discrimination and violence from society and state. Some of them thanked the UK embassy for backing human rights and dignity, and for challenging the stigma and stereotypes that surround LGBTQ people. Some of them shared their personal stories and experiences as LGBTQ people or allies.
