The Governor of Delta State, Sheriff Oborevwori has congratulated Delta Queens for winning the Nigeria Women’s Football League, (NWFL) tournament dubbed Super 6. It was their first league crown since 2012 and their sixth overall.
Delta Queens defeated Bayelsa Queens 2-1 to emerge winners of the Super 6 Competition on June 11, inside the main bowl of the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba.
By emerging champions of the Super 6 tournament, the Delta State girls have qualified to represent Nigeria in the forthcoming West African Football Union (WAFU) B Women’s CAF Champions League qualifiers.
Oborevwori, who received the trophy from the victorious team, congratulated them for a hard fought victory.
He said that Delta was renowned for sports and urged the team to prepare adequately for the continental tournament.
In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Festus Ahon, the Governor described their brilliant performance at the championship as a manifestation of their super outing during the regular season where they topped group B with 26 points.
Oborevwori attributed the team’s victory to hardwork, commitment and focus on the part of the management, the coaches and the players.
He assured that the State Government will continue to support the team to win more laurels for the State and the Country, especially now that it has qualified to represent Nigeria at the West African Football Union (WAFU) Zone B play-off for the second CAF African Women’s Champions League.
Oborevwori said: “I congratulate the organisers for putting up such a quality tournament, where our darling team Delta Queens emerged worthy champions.
“This victory is particularly sweet for me because we are winning it after 11 years. Therefore, on behalf of the Government and people of Delta, I congratulate our dear Delta Queens for making us proud again.
“As a State Government, we will continue to do everything possible to support the team to win more laurels for the State and Country as they represent Nigeria in the CAF Champions League via a WAFU qualifying window in August,” the Governor said.
Remarkably, Delta Queens won the Nigeria Women Football League for the first time in 12 years without a recording a loss.
Delta Queens coach, Tosan Blankson, had in a post victory speech, said: “I want to thank the players first. We know that God is always there for everybody but I want to thank the players first for the intense pressure in the game. We have been preparing for the Super Six even before the end of the regular season. We knew we are playing the Super Six.
“These girls are all national team materials. I am short of words but I give God all the glory for the victory. Don’t be surprised at what you have seen in the regular season and Super Six is the same thing you would see during continental matches. Football is all about planning. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail. We knew the first half is going to be tough for us so we have to keep Chinaza outside. When she came in, she was fresh and gave us the desired goals.”
