Taiwan’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced that it would lift the ban on importing Canadian beef from cattle that are older than 30 months. The revocation of the ban was provided in advance recently, giving a 30-day period for public input.
While talking about the development, FDA Food Safety Division head Cheng Wei-chih, said the exact date that the ban will be lifted has not been decided. He said Canada obtained “negligible risk status” for bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) from the World Organization for Animal Health in February.
After field inspection and risk assessment, the FDA decided in a meeting with experts to lift the ban. The decision to allow Canadian imports came after a government source revealed that the ban had become an obstruction in talks on a proposed bilateral foreign investment promotion and protection agreement between Taipei and Ottawa.
An official who spoke under anonymity said earlier discussions on a potential agreement progressed “very smoothly” until the beef issue arose.
