Alberta Premier Promises To Stop Tax Increment If Re-Elected

The Premier of Alberta, Danielle Smith, has promised that her United Conservative Party (UCP) will not hike personal or business taxes if re-elected and that the Taxpayer Protection Act will be amended to need a referendum for any future tax increases.

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation has hailed the proposal and called it one of the strongest laws safeguarding taxpayers on the continent.

Meanwhile, the move has generated questions about the future of a recent pledge by Finance Minister Travis Toews to establish a panel exploring revenue streams beyond volatile oil and gas revenues.

Toews’ pledge which was made over a month ago, was viewed as an opportunity to tap into new revenue streams or potential taxes that may ensure government funding remains stable irrespective of fossil fuel prices. However, with Smith’s latest announcement, the future of the panel and its work is ambiguous. Toews, a former UCP leadership rival, is not seeking re-election.

During a press conference, the Premier was asked if her announcement had “jumped the gun” on Toews’ panel. Though she didn’t answer directly, she suggested that cutting tax rates could raise revenues.
