Canada has informed its citizens in Sudan that evacuations are impossible now due to airspace closure amid a fierce battle between rival forces.
In a recent tweet, the Canadian government urged its citizens to “continue to shelter in place” and gave them the assurance that it was “coordinating with other countries to respond to the crisis.”
The tweet was posted before US President Joe Biden announced that US government officials and their families had been evacuated in an operation that involved special forces troops.
Recently, Saudi Arabia said it had evacuated Canadian nationals from Sudan to Saudi Arabia but the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not reveal the number of Canadians it evacuated.
1,596 Canadians signed up for the Registration of Canadians Abroad Service in Sudan but this number only provides an estimate of Canadians in Sudan as registration is not compulsory.
Since registration is voluntary, the number of registrants for any given area is typically not fully representative of the number of Canadians actually residing or visiting that area. Canadian citizens can register through the Registration of Canadians Abroad service on the Travel.gc.ca site.
Apart from Canadians, Saudi authorities said they also evacuated citizens of 11 other countries which included Egypt, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.
