Rieaz Shaik, South African High Commissioner-designate to Canada, has urged Canada to help broker an end to the persistent war in Ukraine, instead of sending arms to Kyiv.
While making the urge, Shaik noted that sending weapons will only prolong a menacing conflict that is worsening hunger in developing countries. Also, Shaik called for Russia to be held accountable but asked the Trudeau-led government to shift its foreign policy course.
Though Canada and other G7 countries have promised to support Ukraine, Shaik remarked that the majority of the world’s population dwells in countries that have not condemned Russia for the invasion, owing to trade relationships or political considerations.

Shaik requested negotiated resolution brokered by the UN Security Council, despite needing reforms to its unchanging rules since 1945. He noted that the anti-apartheid movement, which he was part of, achieved its aims through gradual change rather than ultimatums, and said that the two sides in the conflict should be held accountable for their misdeeds.
