The President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, has raised concern over the recent clashes between rival military factions in Sudan.
While speaking to the Transitional President of Chad, Gen. Mahamat Itno, in Makkah, Saudi Arabia recently, Buhari described Sudan’s situation as “unfortunate.” Also, he stated that the country deserves a season of peace after decades of infighting.
During the meeting, Buhari and Itno discussed Sudan’s current situation and urged all neighbouring countries and the international community to prevail on the warring sides to dialogue.
According to a statement signed by the President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the situation was reviewed by the two leaders and they emphasized the need for peace in Sudan.

The recent fight between the military and the paramilitary forces in Sudan has generated great concern across the world.
The military of Sudan and a powerful paramilitary unit, Rapid Support Forces, recently engaged in fierce fighting in the capital, Khartoum, and in other areas of the country.
According to local media reports, at least 56 civilians were confirmed dead and about 600 were injured, mostly in the capital.
Buhari thanked the Chadian leader for his efforts to calm the situation and for them to live peacefully. He noted that more needs to be done.
Itno told Buhari that Sudan’s situation was worrisome as it could spill into other countries. He said: “Unfortunately, if not arrested, it will have serious repercussions on neighbouring countries.”
He also talked about the need for African leaders to step in and help in resolving the conflict.

He said: “For two days, they have been killing themselves. African leaders, especially the elders (President Buhari), Macky Sall (Senegal) and AU Chairperson Azali Assoumani (Comoros) need to step in.”
