NARD: Nigeria now has one doctor to 10,000 patients

A bill which seeks to curtail the influx of Nigerian-trained medical and dental practitioners to other countries has passed second reading at the House of Representatives.

The bill was sponsored by Hon. Ganiyu Abiodun Johnson, a member representing Oshodi Isolo II Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, was read on the floor of the House recently and was titled “A Bill for an Act to Amend the Medical and Dental Practitioners Act, Cap. M379, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 to mandate any Nigeria-trained Medical or Dental Practitioner to Practise in Nigeria for a Minimum of Five (5) before being granted a full licence by the Council in order to make Quality Health Services available to Nigeria; and for Related Matters (HB.2130).”

In a viral video, Ganiyu was seen defending the bill aggressively.

As usual, Nigerians have reacted to the video. Check out some of the reactions below:

@Ogbole_Emma tweeted: “You are a liability to the Tax Payers of Nigeria.”

@Dammyfrosh18 tweeted: “Did you guys appreciate their work. Than to owe them for months.”

@Buchyogba tweeted: “Agbado doctors will also collect 5 years. It will go round. No exemption.”

@Chinanalyst7110 tweeted: “’Japaphobia’? Allow election results to stand, you have fixed it.”

@EmmanuelLucius8 tweeted: “It still don’t make sense we are still leaving the country after 5 years and not coming back again if they want us to stay back they should improve their medical centers and hospitals simple.”

@owolabitaiwo tweeted: “Where did this honorable member got the info of govt subsidizing the university medical undergraduate fee for about N150,000???”

@OBA_ISI tweeted: “Idle Reps. Instead of them to think of providing them the incentives that attract them to japa they are creating more problems as solution. Let them pass a bill banning politicians from medical tourism and sending their kids to private schs and abroad.”

@Nr-deenor tweeted: “The issue is about remuneration.”

@Big_Paul001 tweeted: “Rubbish! The law makers should think of how to better our society by providing the necessary infrastructure, security and basic amenities. If the country is good people won’t be traveling abroad.”

@Talk2Impeccable tweeted: “They can’t propose 5 year mandatory university education for their children in Nigeria, but they have the gall to do it for innocent others.”

@GracieofGod1 tweeted: “Lol.Are they aware that most of d people leaving have up to 5 years post graduation experience?Which is worse?Losing new graduates vs losing people who have work experience? Tackle the problem from root. Are other skilled workers also leaving? Besides, if you think they only reason they are relocating abroad, then you are not being sincere. Poor health facilities, hostile work environment, insecurity are major issues. Poor remuneration is also an issue but NOT the major issue.”

@abimbola08 tweeted: “Does this exempt people who get their medical degrees from private universities? Since the rationale behind this is that the government has subsidized education for YO.U”

@Odima14 tweeted: “They should also pass bill that all politicians should be treated in there state hospital. In no account should they travel outside for treatment.”

@Adelekan6 tweeted: “Make sure u guarantee them a job for dat 5 years o.”

@IBIRONK05053580 tweeted: “Dont restrict or relegate medical certified graduates, how much did fed govt spend on a graduate,it is not peanut #25k/#30k NYSC allowances, after a poor parents had suffered to train his kids and hope to gain. We should be considerate at times, how parents feel.”

@AyobamiPetr tweeted: “Doctors whose expensive school fees were paid through the nose, who suffered under unspeakable conditions while at school of Med, whose destiny were tied to ASUU decisions. Who now look for employment vacancies like every other person. Whom re paid 50k in private establishments.”
