Canada has commenced a joint federal and provincial investigation into TikTok’s handling of personal data following concerns over the platform’s collection, use, and disclosure of personal information.
In a statement released recently, the privacy regulator as well as provincial counterparts in Alberta, Quebec, and British Columbia will carry out the investigation to examine whether the practices of TikTok comply with Canadian privacy laws.
The focus of the investigation will be on whether TikTok is getting valid and meaningful consent for the collection, use, and disclosure of personal information.

This move came at a time when TikTok encounters global scrutiny from governments and regulators that feel China could exploit the app to harvest users’ data or advance its interests.
It should be recalled that Canada accused China of trying to influence its elections and running surveillance activities. These allegations have been denied by China.
