Italy’s Number 1 Wanted Mafia Boss Arrested in Sicily after 30 Years on the Run

Italy’s most wanted mafia boss has been arrested after being on the run for 30 years.

Matteo Messina Denaro, the arrested mafia who is now 60, had been on the run since 1993.

According to police, he was arrested recently at a private hospital in the Sicilian capital of Palermo.

The head of the Carabinieri police force’s special operations squad disclosed that Messina Denaro, who is a boss of Sicily’s Cosa Nostra mafia, was nabbed recently at the clinic where he was being treated for an undisclosed ailment.

Messina Denaro was been sentenced in absentia to life in prison for the role he played in the 1992 murders of anti-mafia prosecutors Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino.

Also, he faces a life sentence for the role he played in bomb attacks in Florence, Rome and Milan which killed 10 people the following year.

The Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, described the arrest as “a great victory for the state that shows it never gives up in the face of the mafia”.

Italian State Television reported that he was taken to a secret location by police immediately after the arrest.

“Today, January 16, the carabinieri … arrested fugitive Matteo Messina Denaro inside a sanitary structure in Palermo, where he had gone for therapeutic treatment,” Pasquale Angelosanto, the general of the carabinieri national police, said.

Prosecutors accused Messina Denaro of being solely or jointly responsible for many other murders in the 1990s.

According to prosecutors, he helped arrange the kidnapping of a 12-year-old boy, Giuseppe Di Matteo, in 1993 in an attempt to prevent his father from giving evidence against the mafia. The boy was held in captivity for twenty four months before he was strangled and his body dissolved in acid.

The arrest of Messina Denaro came 30 years and one day after the capture of Riina, in a Palermo apartment after 23 years on the run.
