If officials of Halton District School Board have a plan to punish the controversial teacher and recent bomb threats made against Oakville high school, the plan will not be disclosed.
After a recent protracted “special meeting” of the Board, trustees approved a motion which states that they aren’t going to disclose any information about the ongoing situation at Oakville Trafalgar High School, where a transgender teacher’s indecent dressing has brewed bomb threats.
Explicitly, trustees collectively approved a motion that stated: “That the Board receive for information confidential discussion topics including personal information and security of the property of the Board. And that the Board acknowledge the legal restrictions on the disclosure of personal information under the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.”
While there are rumours in the Oakville Trafalgar school community that the teacher will be redeployed to reinstate normalcy to students that have had to live with global scrutiny over the issue, the decision of the Board will not be made publicly apparent.
The issue has shown to be a major problem for trustees who have weighed the concerns of students and parents, the ongoing bomb threats received by the school and the legal and human rights of the transgender teacher before presenting a solution.
The teacher, Kayla Lemieux, has sparked controversy since the commencement of this academic term when she started coming to classes wearing oversized prosthetic breasts and a long wig.
Lemieux’s action and subsequent protests have brought international media attention to the school and sparked controversy over what is the appropriate dress to wear to the classroom.
Also, the darker side has forced students to support angry protestors in front of the school and, just recently brought about three bomb threats against the school. Despite the threat, the school was deemed safe for students and staff.
While talking to inhalton.com, a source close to the scene said: “It’s a complicated and delicate issue.
“Some want a quick and easy solution, but there isn’t one. The hands of trustees and Board officials are tied. They have to be careful how to proceed because of the ramifications. A lot of people would like to see the teacher gone, but she has rights that the Board must respect and that is what they are doing.”
Having said that, the secret discussions and negotiations have infuriated many in the school community to the degree that groups have been constituted to pressurize trustees and Board officials to take a decision that would see the teacher redeployed.
