(NC) Drones have become more than just tools for aerial photography and construction; they have also become one of the fastest-growing hobbies. Here are a few things you need to know before you go out and buy your first drone.
The right drone for you
The first step in buying a drone is deciding how you will use it. Drones come with different features, options and price points.

Perhaps you’re interested in a drone that can perform aerial acrobatics? Or maybe you’re more interested in taking photos or making videos from the sky? Perhaps you even want a drone to compete in first-person view (FPV) racing events? How you intend to use your drone will play a key role in helping you decide which one is right for you.
Flight features
Even if you’re interested in buying a drone for something specific, like aerial videography or doing three-dimensional land mapping, you’ll still need to learn the basics. Quadcopters that are ready to fly (RTF) are among the most popular consumer drones. The frames are usually X-shaped or H-shaped with four rotors. The cost of other types of drones tends to be higher, or they’re not suitable for beginners.
In general, the more features a drone has, the more it costs. Many new drone owners start small to get the hang of flying it and to avoid watching their investment crash to the ground.
Fly legally
It’s important for drone operators to fly safely and legally in Canadian airspace. You must understand the regulations and take appropriate safety precautions before taking flight. As responsible drone pilots, we all have a duty to be safe and to respectful.

To plan flights, discover where you can legally fly, and request permission to fly in airspace controlled by Nav Canada, download NAV Drone on your mobile device, or use the web version at navcanada.ca/navdrone
