Police and provincial figures converged in person for the first time since 2019 for the 23rd annual ceremony of remembrance for police officers which took place at Queen’s Park.
Elizabeth Dowdeswell, the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, said: “As her majesty’s representative, I offer police officers and those supporting them today and every day a most sincere thank you on behalf of a grateful province.”
The names of three new police officers names were added to the Ontario Police Memorial on Queen’s Park Crescent during the ceremony.
One of the names was Toronto Police Constable Jeffrey Northrup who was fatally hit by a car during a robbery at an underground parking lot in Toronto City Hall last year.
Northrup’s family talked about the difficulty of his death during a recent memorial in Brampton.
Margaret Northrup said: “I am really thankful that he lived long enough that my children were able to gain his morals and values and teachings.”
Also, the names of Constable Marc Hovingh (OPP) and Constable Joan Theresa VanBreda (Niagara Regional Police) were added to the memorial.
Ontario’s Premier Doug Ford and Ontario’s Solicitor General, Sylvia Jones were also present at the ceremony.
