Multiple award-winning Nigerian Afropop singer, composer and actress Yemi Alade has been appointed as Africa’s ambassador for covid 19.

The 32-year-old music star is tasked with the responsibility of encouraging Africans to get vaccinated against Covid-19, in a campaign called It’s Up to Us.

The campaign is spearheaded by the Africa Centre for Disease Control (CDC) and Mastercard.

As of the time of filing this report, the Africa CDC said just 12.33% of the continent’s population is fully vaccinated, and just 0.91% have received their booster shot.

Harping on the development, the elated Alade, in a tweet said she is excited to join the Africa CDC, Mastercard and thousands of Africans to stop the spread of coronavirus “one shot at a time”.

It would be recalled that in 2020, Yemi was made Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

Alade has several accolades to her name. She won the Peak Talent Show in 2009 after which she signed to Effyzzie Music Group, and had a hit with her single “Jonny” in 2014. Since then, Yemi has gained prominence in the music industry and considered one of the biggest artists in Africa. Following the releases of her albums King of Queens and Mama Africa with huge commercial success recorded for both albums, this made her embark on world tours consecutively.

Alade sings in English, Igbo, Pidgin, Yoruba, French, Swahili and Portuguese. Her music has been of influence in many African countries and the world as she is acclaimed “Mama Africa” for her versatility in using different African Languages and attires in her songs and music videos.
