The United Nations and President Joe Biden of the United States have condemned the attack that targeted Iraq’s Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhemi.

In a statement, Biden said his administration would help Iraqi security forces identify those responsible.

The President said “I strongly condemn the terrorist attack targeting the residence of Iraqi Prime Minister al-Kadhemi”.

“I am relieved the Prime Minister was not injured and commend the leadership he has shown in calling for calm, restraint, and dialogue to protect the institutions of the state and strengthen the democracy Iraqis so richly deserve.”

He added that “The United States stands firmly with the government and people of Iraq as they strive to uphold Iraq’s sovereignty and independence.”

On his part, the United Nations chief in a statement, stated that “The Secretary-General strongly condemns the assassination attempt against Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi earlier today. He calls for the perpetrators of this crime to be held accountable.

“The United Nations will continue to stand with the people and Government of Iraq as they strive for a better future.”

It was gathered that al-Kadhemi escaped unhurt when an explosives-packed drone struck his Baghdad residence. The attack, however, marked a substantial escalation in the country’s post-election turmoil.

The office of the Prime Minister described the attack as a “failed assassination attempt,” while Iraqi President Barham Salih called the strike, which was not immediately claimed by any group, an attempted “coup against the constitutional system.”
