An accident which occurred at the Vale-operated Totten mine in Sudbury, Ontario, has trapped 39 workers underground.
The accident happened recently when a scoop bucket being conveyed underground shifted and prevented the shaft of the mine.
After the accident occurred, the trapped miners went to refuge stations where they have had gotten access to food and water. Also, the miners have contacted the above-ground staff.
Production has been suspended by rescue efforts at the mine, which delivered 3,600 metric tonnes of nickel between January and June 2021.
While talking about the accident, the President of Union USW Local 6500, which represents most employees of Totten Mine, Nick Larochelle said: “Fortunately, no one has been physically injured in this incident.
“Every effort is being made to ensure everyone is brought back to the surface safely and as quickly as possible.”
The Head of Mining Operations of Vale Ontario, Gord Gilpin said: “There is no doubt this was and continues to be an exhausting experience. I commend them on their patience and their resolve.
“I also want to acknowledge the efforts of our mine rescue team and Totten responders who are working tirelessly to bring their colleagues to the surface safely.”
The Totten mine commenced production in February 2014 and is situated in the Worthington region. The mine produces copper, nickel and other precious metals.
