Zimbabwe is currently grappling with a significant exodus of teachers, with approximately 300 educators leaving the country each month, as reported by the Zimbabwe Teachers’ Association.
The primary reason behind this exodus is the notably lower salaries in Zimbabwe when compared to other countries in southern Africa.
Despite the economic challenges that make salary increases a formidable task, the country faces the urgent need to both retain and attract teaching talent. Currently, the average teacher in Zimbabwe earns a meager maximum of $350 per month. This low income level has resulted in the departure of qualified educators, who play a vital role in shaping the nation’s learners. Furthermore, budget constraints hinder the employment of additional teachers required to support the educational needs of the country’s students.
For decades, Zimbabwe’s education system was highly regarded and considered one of the best on the African continent, serving as one of the few achievements during the tenure of former President Robert Mugabe’s regime.
