In a remarkable incident, a worker that fell approximately 43 meters (140 feet) from the Ambassador Bridge into the Detroit River has been rescued and is expected to recover. The fall happened while the contractor was working on the bridge, and instant medical attention was provided upon his retrieval from the water. The quick response and actions of rescuers played a vital role in the worker’s survival.
Esther Jentzen, spokesperson for the Ambassador Bridge Company, disclosed that a contractor for the bridge company fell from the bridge during work. The worker was taken to a local hospital for medical evaluation and treatment. Windsor harbour master Peter Berry revealed that the fall happened from the bridge deck, plunging approximately 43 meters into the Detroit River at around 4:20 p.m.
The J.W. Westcott, captained by Sam Buchanan, played a major role in the rescue operation. The boat quickly got to the worker in the water, and despite the impact of the fall, the individual was conscious and communicated. The worker was confused and inquired about the details of the incident. The force of the fall tore off the worker’s clothing, with the pants pulled down to the ankles while the boots remained intact.
The successful rescue operation brought relief and optimism as the survival of the worker was made possible by the swift response and effective coordination of the rescue teams involved. The worker’s conscious state and ability to communicate after he was rescued are positive indicators for recovery and rehabilitation.
The local hospital will provide further medical assessment and treatment to ensure the wellbeing of the worker.
