A court in United Arab Emirates (UAE) has sentenced a woman to three months in prison after her husband sued her for accessing his phone without his permission.
In a statement, the husband claimed that his wife would access his phone while he was sleeping, and copy every data, including pictures and chat conversations to her smartphone so she could peruse the information at a later date.
The Court in Ras Al Khaimah found her guilty of contravening the UAE’s strict privacy Law, which states that married couple are forbidden from accessing each other’s phones without permission, even if one of the couple suspects that the other is cheating.
In Arab countries, promulgated laws subject women to very harsh judgement compared to men. It is evident in Saudi Arabia’s recent permission for women to drive motor vehicles. A development that was considered a crime for many years.
