What to do when your children grow up

Many parents have mixed feelings when their children finally leave home. Some parents feel sadness while others feel joy. Theres no right way to feel and thats why it is advisable to allow yourself to explore this new stage of parenting. Both you and your child will be experiencing a new found freedom.

Below we have listed some of the best tips to guide you into your new life with your grown-up child. There is no need to feel lonely because some parents have even said they grew a deeper relationship with their children after they left home because they started appreciating how complicated it is to raise a family once they had their own children. You might be surprised that you grow a better relationship with your child because he is more mature and understanding after experiencing life on his/her own.

Explore a new hobby
It is advisable to spend your time on hobbies and self-care activities. Its now time to explore hobbies that you used to find too dangerous for a parent or too time consuming.

You can even get back to the hobbies that you used to enjoy before becoming a parent.

Youre going to have a lot of free time and its therefore important to find activities that are useful. For instance, you can improve your health by engaging in fitness activities like going to the gym, walking, hiking, playing soccer in the evenings and swimming. You can also do activities like cooking, yoga, knitting, reading clubs, volunteering, photography, trips with others and gardening.

Welcome the spouse
Your child might date someone that you dont like or might have left a partner you liked; however its important to respect his/her decision. Welcome them into the family and make it a rule to be warm to your childs spouse. Avoid making negative comments unless there is a sign of mistreatment and abuse.  If youre a single parent, then this is also a good time for you to find love as well. Remember, you will have a lot of free time to meet new people and you dont have to think about how your love life will affect your child because theyve moved out.

Both your child and his significant other will be grateful for the warmth youve shown them. This is important for improving a close connection with your child.

Organize enjoyable things to do without encroaching on their freedom

They say that distance makes the heart grow fonder. Every minute you spend with your child will become more meaningful after he has left home. You dont have to parent him/her as you used to and therefore you can enjoy beautiful experiences like two friends. The time you spend together is limited and therefore you will have to milk every juice out of it.

Give your child equal freedom to make decisions like where to go and what to do. Suggest something fun and figure it out together.  Dont be too pushy by forcing your own ideas.

Use technology to keep in touch
You can easily stay connected regardless of whether your child stays across town, down the street, in another state or even in a different continent. Technology will bring you closer even if youre far away from each other.

There are numerous technological options to pick from. You can use video calls, texting and phone calls. Alternatively, you can simply follow each other on social media.

Discuss with your child to identify which is the best mode of communication for both of you. Remember to be realistic; dont expect to talk to your child daily on video chats.

Set some new goals
Now that you have brought up a responsible human being who can take care of himself/herself, its time to focus on your personal life. Do you want to renovate your house? Do you feel like getting that degree course now? Do you want to travel the world? Decide what you want to do and get started.

Its possible to achieve your goals because you have more time and more money to invest now that youre free from the responsibilities of parenting.

Embrace the change
Many parents fall into the trap of over-parenting and this normally results in a negative reaction from their children. You dont have to be involved in every aspect of your childs life especially after they move out. Accept the change and embrace it as a new phase of your lives where you both get to experience freedom.

Do you remember how happy you were to enjoy life when you moved out from your parents house? Your child needs the same experience. Instead of having a child and parent relationship, this is your chance to build a relationship of equals.

Conclusion
Now that we have given you some tips of what to do with your free time when your child finally leaves the nest, its time regain your youthfulness by engaging in some of the above activities. Its time for new activities like a new hobby or visiting new places across the globe. We wish you an enjoyable experience.
