Prosecutors have filed charges against a New Jersey Democrat, accusing them of accepting bribes to leverage their influence for the benefit of three businessmen and the Egyptian government. The accused, US Senator Robert Menendez, a Democrat representing New Jersey, and his spouse, stand accused of bribery-related offenses.
These allegations revolve around their acceptance of gifts that include gold bars, cash, and a Mercedes-Benz, in exchange for safeguarding the interests of three businessmen and exerting influence on behalf of Egypt.
During a search of the Menendez residence in New Jersey, FBI special agents uncovered a significant quantity of gold bars provided by one of the businessmen, Fred Daibes, who is a builder among the trio. According to Damian Williams, the US attorney for the southern district of New York, agents also discovered approximately $500,000 in cash concealed within envelopes and closets, with some found stashed in Senator Menendez’s jacket pockets. Furthermore, the FBI located the Mercedes-Benz vehicle that Jose Uribe, another businessman and former insurance agent, had gifted to the couple.
Williams emphasized that the investigation is ongoing, encouraging anyone with relevant information to come forward promptly. Senator Menendez, who has held office in the Senate since 2006, and his wife face three criminal counts each, including conspiracy to commit bribery, conspiracy to commit honest services fraud, and conspiracy to commit extortion under the color of official right. As of now, the senator’s office has not provided a comment on the matter.
Notably, this is not the first time Senator Menendez has faced legal charges. Previously, he was charged in New Jersey for accepting private flights, campaign contributions, and other favors from a wealthy supporter in exchange for official favors. However, the 2017 trial resulted in a jury deadlock.
In this federal case, the government is seeking the forfeiture of assets, which includes the Menendezes’ New Jersey home, a 2019 Mercedes-Benz vehicle, approximately $566,000 in cash, gold bars, and funds from a bank account. The businessmen involved in the scheme, namely Wael Hana, Uribe, and Daibes, also face charges.

Prosecutors assert that Hana, originally from Egypt, arranged meetings and dinners between Senator Menendez and Egyptian officials in 2018. During these interactions, Egyptian officials pressured Menendez regarding the status of US military aid. In return, Hana placed Nadine Menendez on his company’s payroll.
The indictment additionally alleges that Senator Menendez exerted improper pressure on a senior official at the Department of Agriculture to protect a lucrative monopoly awarded to Wael Hana by the Egyptian government. Hana is said to have used these funds for certain bribe payments.
Furthermore, the indictment suggests that Senator Menendez used his influence to interfere with a criminal investigation and prosecution conducted by the New Jersey attorney general’s office, related to an associate and relative of Jose Uribe.
At the time, Egypt was one of the largest recipients of US military aid, but the US State Department had withheld $195 million in 2017 and cancelled an additional $65.7 million, pending improvements in human rights and democracy. During a 2018 meeting, Senator Menendez allegedly shared non-public information about the status of aid with Hana, who subsequently texted an Egyptian official regarding the lifting of the ban on small arms and ammunition to Egypt, as per the publicly disclosed indictment.
