UNILAG Professor wins ₦958 million Bill Gates Foundation Grant

A Nigerian Professor, Bosede Afolabi has made the headlines after winning the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Grant.

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) gynecologist won a research grant of $2,518,474.00 (N958,908,975.50) for her project titled ‘Intravenous Versus Oral Iron for Iron Deficiency Anaemia in Pregnant Nigerian Women (IVON)’.

The announcement was made by UNILAG, while celebrating the Nigerian professor on its LinkedIn page.

According to the website of UNILAG, Professor Bosede Afolabi’s research in sickle cell pregnancy has earned her international recognition.

As the Principal Investigator of the project, Professor Afolabi will lead a multicentre study which will operate for 3 years (November 1, 2020 – October 31, 2023). The research will be carried out in 10 hospitals within Lagos and Kano State and it will recruit 1,056 women between 20-32 weeks gestational age, who are diagnosed of having anaemia at the hospitals antennal clinics.

Professor Bosede Afolabi is recognized internationally for her research in sickle cell pregnancy. Her interests lie in maternal and fetal medicine, minimal access (laparoscopic) Surgery and Maternal education. She is a fellow of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists UK, West African College of Surgeons, and the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria.
