Anthony Okafor, an automotive engineering graduate from Nnamdi Azikiwe University, has been making waves in Nigeria’s renewable energy, solar, and automotive industries. Founder of Okafor Motors, a factory specializing in auto manufacturing and solar power systems in Enugu, Okafor gained attention in 2020 for unveiling a solar electric-powered tricycle constructed in just 21 days.
The innovative tricycle garnered interest not only for its eco-friendly design but also for its potential to revolutionize transportation in Nigeria. Seeking support for mass production, Okafor’s call was answered by the Sustainable Communities Corporation (SCC), a non-profit organization based in Ohio, USA.
The partnership between Okafor Motors and SCC aims to mass-produce solar-powered tricycles and quadricycles, providing sustainable transportation options while uplifting local operators from poverty. Under the new entity, NrG Company (pronounced “energy”), plans are underway to produce a range of solar-powered vehicles, including modifications like quadricycles and electric bikes.
SCC’s subsidiary, WinBat company, will contribute its hemp battery technology to enhance the performance of the solar-electric vehicles, making them competitive with conventional gasoline-powered alternatives.
Despite a four-year wait since the prototype’s launch, Okafor remained steadfast in his vision. Utilizing this time for research and development, Okafor Motors is confident in launching at least two different models—a three-seater tricycle and a six-seater quadracycle.
Jeff Greene, spokesperson for SCC/WinBat, expressed optimism about the partnership, hailing it as a “Nigerian Success Story.” SCC’s involvement extends beyond manufacturing vehicles; they plan to establish a leasing company to facilitate access to the solar-powered vehicles, further supporting Nigeria’s transportation infrastructure.
NrG Company will also delve into battery and plastic recycling, aligning with SCC’s sustainability mission. Additionally, SCC’s subsidiary, Wisconsin Battery Company (WinBat), will provide technological expertise and funding to expedite the project’s success in Nigeria.
Overall, the collaboration between Okafor Motors and SCC signifies a significant step towards sustainable transportation solutions in Nigeria, showcasing the power of innovation and international partnerships.
